The title track of the True Blue album was released as third single on September 17, 1986 (with a UK release on September 29). This bubblegum love song took a break from her uptempo pop singles. It became a #1 hit in the UK (Gold), Ireland and Japan, while reaching #2 in Canada and Belgium, and #3 in the US (Gold). Canada, Germany and France settled for #6.
Video
There are two different videos for True Blue. The official video - released in Europe - was directed by James Foley. It shows Madonna and three backup singers (including her friend Debi Mazar) as some all-American bubblegum-chewing girls chatting about their true love. Compared to the controversial Like A Virgin and Open Your Heart, this song and video were totally different from Madonna's style. A second video for True Blue - released in the US - was made by Angel Gracia and Cliff Guest, winners of the MTV 'Make My Video'-contest.
Tour
On the Who's That Girl Tour, Madonna got out a pretty white dress for this lovey-dovey song. Her girlfriends back her up behind her. Then her guy (the dancer) invites her for a sweet dance.
While True Blue has been shunned from all the compilation albums, 28 years later Madonna rediscovered the song on the Rebel Heart Tour and treated her hardcore fans to a sweet rendition. Stripping away all the 1980s elements of the song, Madonna performs an acoustic version of True Blue on her ukulele during the second segment of the show, after her first speech of the night. In a 1950s inspired group setting with her dancers, Madonna makes the sun burst out of the sky with her beautiful voice.
