Hung Up

Lyrics

Time goes by so slowly (6x)

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Time goes by so slowly for those who wait
No time to hesitate
Those who run seem to have all the fun
I'm caught up
I don't know what to do

Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
I don't know what to do

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Ring ring ring goes the telephone
The lights are on but there's no-one home
Tick tick tock it's a quarter to two
And I'm done
I'm hanging up on you

I can't keep on waiting for you
I know that you're still hesitating
Don't cry for me
'cause I'll find my way
You'll wake up one day
But it'll be too late

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing, every little thing
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call, waiting for your call
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Time goes by so slowly (4x)
So slowly (14x)
I don't know what to do

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing, every little thing
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call, waiting for your call
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Single

Hung Up, the single'A big feel-good song' is how producer Stuart Price calls this lead-off single from the album Confessions On A Dance Floor, released to radio on October 17, 2005. Earlier, the single featured in a Motorola commercial and a 30 second long ringtone was released on September 19. The CD single came in stores on November 7.

Hung Up debuted at #20 in the US Hot 100 Singles chart and peaked in its 5th week at #7. This makes it her 36th US Top 10 hit, equaling record holder Elvis Presley. It was certified Platinum in August 2008 for 1 milion paid downloads. It became a record breaking #1 smash hit in 41 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the UK (her 11th UK #1).

Video

Hung Up, the videoAfter collaboration plans with David LaChapelle didn't work out, Madonna worked with Johan Renck (Nothing Really Matters) to direct her Hung Up video. Inspired by the movie Saturday Night Fever, it shows Madonna in pink outfit, doing a workout on the song (the album version).

Meanwhile people in the streets play the song on their boomboxes and start Krumping to its disco beat. Everywhere, in the streets, in a diner, in a subway, they're competing with the best dance moves. Madonna then walks down a dark alley in a black leather jacket, shaking her sexy ass. As the music fades and leaves only a thumping bass, we see Madonna brushing up against a guy, in slow motion. As the beat gets back, they all dance on a DDR machine in an arcade, all groovin' to Hung Up. The video premiered simultaneously on music TV networks on October 27th.

Tour

Hung Up @ Confessions TourNo better way to end the Confessions Tour than with the smash #1 hit of the past year. Madonna had announced this tour saying "I want people to feel like they're inside a disco ball". That's exactly how the crowd feels when the giant disco ball starts turning, shining its lights on the whole venue. Stuart gives them a big teaser, by mixing Hung Up with Lucky Star. Madonna sings the Hung Up chorus, but then disappears from the stage. Tension is build up with a long powerful instrumental intro, still a bit intertwined with Lucky Star. Then Madonna and her dancers appear on a rack in the back (as in the EMA performance).

Madonna wears a sexy leotard, a purple jacket and sun glasses. The dancers give their all in a stream of choreographies, before they and Madonna get physical during the breakdown. Slowly they all crawl onto the catwalk. Madonna walks towards the end where she 'rides' a big boombox. At the climax, golden balloons fall from the ceiling, causing a fight among fans to get hold of them. But soon Madonna re-unites them with a big singalong contest. Everybody goes mad on the line "Time goes by... so slowly!" as Madge urges to sing louder. All the dancers, also including Donna and Niki, and even Isaac return to the stage for a grand finale with disco roll. A big bang calls the end of the performance and of the tour. As the ticking of the clock slows down, Madonna - as usual - has the last word: "I'm tired of waiting on you..."

Hung Up @ Sticky & Sweet TourHung Up is the only COADF track that made the Sticky & Sweet Tour setlist. But on every show before starting this hit single, she introduces a singalong request moment. While European fans are mostly treated to Express Yourself or Like A Virgin, Madonna sings a broad range of hits on the American leg of the tour. As the clapping continues, Madonna starts jamming her guitar to a heavy rock version of Hung Up "In exactly 29 moves, the Queen will topple the King!" says our Queen, referring to the giant chess game on the screens. During the breakdown, she plucks her guitar strings, comparing the creepy sound to what "Sarah Palin's husband's snow mobile sounds like when it won't start." It's only then that the dancers emerge on stage for a short while. Then Madonna gives her all and bangs her guitar, until the song flows into the grand finale of the night. On the 2009 leg, this performance was replaced by Frozen and the request section was dropped.

Hung Up @ MDNA TourOn the MDNA Tour, Hung Up got another makeover as Madonna performed a condensed version with several lyrics edited out and the ABBA sample used only once. This darker rendition focuses on Madonna trying to come clean of her transgressions (or her second marriage). The masked dancers, possibly representing the binding norms of society, chain her and push her around as her vocals turn mechanical. She gets literally 'hung up' on the ropes while the dancers are slacklining on top. During the breakdown, where the act of contrition leitmotif appears again, Madonna walks the wire and eventually defeats her demons and is ready to let go of her marriage, culminating in the explicit I Don't Give A.

Hung Up was the surprise song in the Latin / Gypsy Segment of the Rebel Heart Tour on both shows in Hong Kong.
