Into The Groove
Lyrics
And you can dance
For inspiration
Come on
I'm waiting
Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be
Music can be such a revelation
Dancing around you feel the sweet sensation
We might be lovers if the rhythm's right
I hope this feeling never ends tonight
Only when I'm dancing can I feel this free
At night I lock the doors, where no one else can see
I'm tired of dancing here all by myself
Tonight I wanna dance with someone else
Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be
Gonna get to know you in a special way
This doesn't happen to me every day
Don't try to hide it, love wears no disguise
I see the fire burning in your eyes
Only when I'm dancing can I feel this free
At night I lock the doors, where no one else can see
I'm tired of dancing here all by myself
Tonight I wanna dance with someone else
Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be, yeah
Live out your fantasy here with me
Just let the music set you free
Touch my body, and move in time
Now I know you're mine
You've got to
Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be
Only when I'm dancing can I feel this free
At night I lock the doors, where no one else can see
I'm tired of dancing here all by myself
Tonight I wanna dance with someone else
Live out your fantasy here with me
Just let the music set you free
Touch my body, and move in time
Now I know you're mine
Now I know you're mine
Now I know you're mine
Now I know you're mine
Now I know you're mine
You've got to
Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be
You've got to
Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be
You've got to
Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be
You've got to
Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be

Single
Madonna wrote this song for Desperately Seeking Susan, her first successful movie. At first it wasn't included in Like A Virgin, neither was it released as a single. In the US it was the B-single of Angel, but turned out a much bigger success than the single itself. But since it wasn't commercially released in the US, it didn't enter the charts there. The song was included in the re-issue of the Like A Virgin album in Europe, where it was released as a single on July 23, 1985. Strangely, the soundtrack of Desperately Seeking Susan didn't contain the song. It topped the charts in the UK for 4 weeks (it even kept the re-entry of her own Holiday from reaching the top spot) and in Japan for 3 weeks. It was also Madonna's first #1 hit in Belgium.

The video that accompanied the single consisted of images from the movie Desperately Seeking Susan, directed by Susan Seidelman.
Tour
While Madonna was on the road for the first time ever, Into The Groove was burning up the airwaves and MTV, so the audience quickly got into the groove when Madonna kicked off this song as the 3rd number on the Virgin Tour. She made sure the audience was hers as she danced through the song while playing the tambourine.
You can dance, you can dance if you want to. The catchy tune was used as final song on the Who's That Girl Tour (before the encore). Since the show is almost over, Madonna gives her all (as always). During a long instrumental interlude, she and her dancers and backup singers dance from one side of the stage to the other, showing their grooves.
On the Blond Ambition Tour, Madonna, Niki and Donna are being seduced by 3 macho guys in leather jackets. The girls ask them to "prove their love to them" and wonder if they'd wear a rubber when necessary. They kick into the Shep Pettibone extended remix of Into The Groove with some groovy dance steps two by two.
Into The Groove was an absolute highlight on the Re-Invention Tour. First there was a fabulous intro by a Scottish bagpiper & drummers. Then all dancers appeared on stage in kilts, dancing to the beats of the Into The Hollywood Groove mix. Madonna literally jumped out on stage and kicked into this fantastic choreography with wooden sticks. On the screen Missy Elliott accompanied her with cool beats. Finally, the bagpiper re-appeared on stage to follow Madonna's dance steps. There was so much energy during this performance that the whole venue was really getting into the groove!
"Let me hear you make some noise!" Just when we thought this song couldn't be re-imagined anymore, this real energy booster kicks off the Old School segment of the Sticky & Sweet Tour. While the song is interspersed with many samples, we get a visual spectacle on stage. While the riff of 'Toop Toop' (by Cassius) blows up the venue, Madonna and her dancers get out their jumping rope, taking us back into time to the NYC of the early 80s. Another reference to that era are the colourful figures on the screens, that pay homage to Madonna's friend, the late Keith Haring. "Now it's time for my ultimate fantasy... the double dutch!" Madonna cheekily continues. As a sample of Jump sets the tone, the dancers make our Queen jump to the beat. While DJ Enferno keeps 'em spinning, she even works the pole. She puts the icing on the cake when she lets her fans sing along while she jumps the rope again, before crashing down on stage.
Into The Groove only got a small nod at the Rebel Heart Tour. During the latino-themed Dress You Up performance, Madonna includes the chorus and 2 verses of Into The Groove as well as 2 verses of Lucky Star, as to give a taste of her 80s classics.
